Jocelyn Burr

Jocelyn Burr

My name is Jocelyn Burr and as a Graduate Student in International Development Studies at Dalhousie University I am really interested in issues about environmental and social justice, from our own backyard, to the far side of the globe. I am originally from Winnipeg where I took my undergraduate degree in Global Political Economy, but I am happy to call beautiful Halifax home for now. I am doing my research on how children learn about development issues which is a real treat for me because I love working with young kids.

I grew up baptized into the United Church, attending a Catholic church, a Presbyterian church, and a nondenominational church at various points until I was a teenager, so my spiritual background was an eclectic mix of Christianities. After several difficult teenage years, I began university and realized how much I need prayer, communion, and the community of the church back in my life. I started going back to church and found it an immense relief in my life. When I moved to Halifax I was guided to the Lutheran Church of the Resurrection. It here became my hope to unite my passion for social justice with my Christian spiritual guidance, to see God on a mission in the world and try in my own way to be part of it.

At Dalhousie I have started to become involved with the Women’s Centre on Campus, which is a really delightful place for students, alumni, and all women and their allies. I feel very strongly about the local anti-war and anti-poverty movements in our city and am becoming more involved in these initiatives. Moreover, as I see issues around international policy on immigration, trade, and aid changing, I want to make others aware of Canada’s impact on other nations and peoples and hope we can together impact our nation’s decision makers.

I really enjoy running, swimming, and playing waterpolo and soccer in my recreational time. I also learned to fiddle when I was growing up so I am determined to be out busking on the streets of Halifax one of these days. I love trying out new activities and always seem to have a lot of projects on the go. Currently I am trying to self-instruct my way through refinishing a coffee table I found on the side of the road.

I look forward to being an active part of the Lutheran faith community in Halifax and to working with students and all of you in the coming year and am thankful for this opportunity to do so. May God bless and guide us, each one, as His will be done. Peace be with you.
